Speaking Module


Essentials of Listening Module:

1. Duration: 11 to 14 minutes.
2. There are three parts

Part 1
The candidate and examiner introduce themselves. Candidate answers general questions about his family, hobbies, interests, study, clothing, computer and internet, reasons for taking IELTS exam etc. This part lasts between four and five minutes

Part 2
Candidates are given topic cards. Candidates have one minute to prepare for talking on the topic. Then candidate have to speak about the topic for one to two minutes.

Part 3
It involves a discussion between the examiner and candidate generally on questions relating to the theme of topic of part 2. This part lasts between four to five minutes.

How to improve Speaking Skills - Guidelines

       Speaking module assesses your fluency, pronunciation, and grammatical accuracy in English language. It means you have to focus on improving fluency, pronunciation, and grammatical accuracy in English language.
         There are many ways to improve your fluency in English language. One way to improve fluency is to deliver speeches on various topics in English. Select a topic and start speaking about the topic in English. Even if you are sitting in your room and there is no one to listen to you, consider that a lot of people are sitting in front of you, listening to you and you delivering them a speech. Speak about the topic as much as you can. Doing so again and again will improve your fluency in English. 
            Another way to improve your fluency is to participate in discussions with your friends in English. If you are a student, it is very easy for you to engage in discussion with them on certain topics. There is a very common problem which refrains learners from talking in English that is shyness. Usually the learners don’t talk in English as they fear that they might make a mistake and may be subjected to criticism by others. Never feel shyness in speaking English if you make mistakes because you are a learner and one learns learns from one’s mistakes. You can’t learn until you make mistake. Just shed this shyness. Make it a habit to talk in English to improve your fluency and over all speaking skills.
          Uttering correct pronunciation of words you speak is very important. For learning correct pronunciation you can take help of dictionary. It is better to use “Talking dictionary” because you learn pronunciation by listening to it instead of learning by reading pronunciation by symbols in text dictionary. You can also learn correct pronunciation by listening to English news daily and watching English movies.
         Grammatical accuracy is the important part of good speaking skills. Grammar rules for using correct form of verb, tense and parts of speech from grammar book but its application in spoken English is developed by practice. In speaking you have comparatively little time to think and decide than in writing. By speaking in English and paying heed to grammatical accuracy you can gain command on it.

Few tips for speaking module

            Apart from improving your general speaking skills for speaking modules of IELTS, you should also prepare for each part of speaking module accordingly. In Part 1 you have to introduce yourself and answer general questions about your family background, hobbies, interests etc. So you should prepare how to introduce yourself properly and how to answer the expected questions. In Part 2 you have to speak on a topic. You are given one minute to prepare for speaking the topic. Try to make outlines or notes about the topic which will help you speaking on the topic comprehensively. It will also help you in Part 3 in which you have to discussion about question relating the theme of topic in Part 2.
